Apologies - no stream today, as I am working hard on some important features for the upcoming update.

For you Patrons, here is a sneak peek of the largest new feature coming in the update: Crafting Tools.

Crafting Tools? In a bugfixing update?

Fair point, dear user; please allow me to explain.

In my view, crafting currently suffers from the following issues:

Displayed recipes are an unruly mess. CCOR's crafting categories attempt to wrangle the recipes, but the categories themselves are pretty obtuse to use. Compound this with all the weirdo recipes that currently appear at the Forge, and it's just not a good experience.

Characters can craft complex recipes with no tools. Ever tried to make full leather armor or a wooden bed with only your hands? (This issue is thematic versus functional, but it has always grated on my personal sense of immersion.)

In attempting to fix these issues for the update, I believe I've come up with a solution that serves as both a "bugfix" and a feature in its own right: Crafting Tools.

How does it work?

Basically, sets of tools are now required for crafting recipes. Some example toolsets are Smithing Tools, Tailoring Tools, and Construction Tools.

Here are the details:

Recipes will appear in your crafting menu while you hold the requisite tools. For example, holding the Tailoring Tools reveals clothing recipes and leather/hide armor recipes, holding the Construction Tools reveals furniture / emplacement recipes, etc. This way, you can easily find the recipes you need and yeet the ones you don't.

You can further sort by activating these tools directly within the inventory. This will show a crafting menu with only that toolset's recipes.

Crafting stations are still required for applicable recipes. For example, shaping ingots still requires a forge, smelting ingots still requires a smelter, and tanning pelts still requires a tanning rack.

I think this system is far more intuitive, and it also creates a solid framework for future expansions to the crafting system, including recipes/recipe books, crafting time elapse, and additional crafting stations.

I will be back next week to show it off to y'all, along with some of the other fixes, and I hope you have a wonderful weekend between.

All the best,

Dylan

2022-02-18T20:32:51.000+00:00
/posts/no-stream-today-62744726
Happy one month Wildlander anniversary! <3 Still on that #PushForPartner, here's this week's stream times!

Hello there Wildlanders, and happy Monday! Long

This week's update is very special, because it involves an area we've been tweaking for a while now: death mechanics.

One of my biggest gripes with Skyrim is the way it handles death. The only consequence for death is reloading a save, which is both boring and disruptive of game flow. It also offers no real punishment and encourages save-scumming — another practice I detest, because it makes mistakes meaningless and makes it harder to reward players for skilled play.

To fix this problem, I designed US as a permadeath experience. With such a heavy death consequence, the game becomes much tenser and forces players to think critically about every action.

However, Skyrim was not designed with permadeath in mind, and with this new system came new problems:

US's slow pace makes players become too afraid to take risks. Without balanced risk-reward systems, gameplay becomes boring. Players only fight sure victories, or risk losing their entire character.

Skyrim can be wonky, and will kill you in bullshit ways. You might "trip and die" over a physics-enabled rock, or an errant spoon might freak out and end your life. This is unacceptable for permadeath.

There is no easy way to transfer MCM settings between saves. Permadeath games typically offer quick restart times to reduce the sting of death and get players back in the action, but this is currently impossible in Ultimate Skyrim. Instead, you get to set up almost every MCM all over again.

For these reasons I sought alternative death consequences for 4.0, and for most of development, we've been working with a custom version of Death is Highly Overrated Redone to accomplish our goals.

However, after examining our options, it looked like a proprietary solution was necessary to ensure the experience we intended — and to this end, /u/SrGatonegro has been working on some new mechanics that we're ready to reveal today.

All of this is subject to change, but by default in 4.0, Death will work as follows:

Players who die lose all of their belongings (except quest items). These items will be stored in a container at the location of death. Enemies will respawn in the dungeon/cell where you died.

The player will respawn at a bed of their choosing, with a series of debilitating wounds (thanks to the mod Wounds). These wounds can be addressed in many ways, or left to heal on their own.

The player can retrieve their items by reaching the location of their death, but if they die again before retrieval, their items are lost forever. (Dark Souls players will be familiar with this system.)

These features are currently planned as optional, meaning players can still opt for vanilla death mechanics OR permadeath, if they choose.

Our hope is that this will create an awesome risk-reward experience that provides punishing death consequences, without being overly punishing.

We think this will also reward preparation and skilled play, since players can prepare for their inevitable death(s) by stockpiling medical supplies & other resources (to quicken the recovery process).

We're very excited for these features, and we'll keep you posted if anything changes.

As always, thank you for reading, and I'll see you next week!

BB

Hello my friends, and welcome to another weekly update!

A hearty welcome to our New Patrons:

Brian Peirce

Carlos Santana

Daniel Sanusi

Jeff Carr

josh nonymous

Justin Mohr

kaderat123

KrovaxTV

Markus Pohl

Nupanuzan

Shyam Ajudia

TheResolute

Tyler Nau

Veggie Burgers

This week is another doozy, so let's jump right in.

Today marks Release 2 of the Ultimate Skyrim 4.0 Beta. Goodie Bag Patrons can access Beta r2 by clicking this link!

A quick reminder that this month's Patron Stream will take place this Sunday, January 21st @ 12:00pm PST. We'll be playing the new Beta Release 2, and I'll be answering your questions about Ultimate Skyrim, the channel, and whatever else!

This week's biggest new addition is Skyrim Sewers by Viltuska. Players with average hygiene experience no bonuses or penalties, to prevent tedious micromanagement.

Players can also craft & purchase soaps that confer unique and fun bonuses. These bonuses last as long as the player remains clean, and are thoughtfully patched for Ultimate Skyrim's gameplay ecosystem.

I'm very excited about BiS, because I believe it adds significant fun & depth to player management without ever feeling obtrusive. It also interacts with pre-existing systems in enjoyable ways: towns and cities become even more important (as safe places to bathe), and water temperature/dry shelter becomes an important consideration when bathing in colder areas, or in the wilds.

I'm also pleased to announce the inclusion of Art of the Catch by Chesko. AotC adds real-time fishing to the game, which is a great way to source a meal or simply pass some time. It also removes the player's ability to catch fish with their hands, which is a mechanic I always found strange.

Fish must actually be present for you to catch them, and different fish are available in different regions/water types, so keep an eye on Skyrim's rivers and oceans as you explore. For those unaware, SS unpauses in-game menus (a la Dark Souls), so you can no longer freeze time while rummaging through your backpack/magic menu/etc.

This certainly takes some getting used to, but I absolutely love the gameplay opportunities SS presents. For one, preparation & awareness are even more important -- no more scarfing down potions from the safety of your menus. Pickpocketing and Lockpicking are much more tense, since the world continues on around you (and that guard might come around that corner any second!) It also allows you to pass time while you read, play tavern games, etc., which is a nice roleplaying touch.

To accommodate this new gameplay style, I'm looking into hotkey/control/UI mods that will make it easier to manage your equipment in real-time. Missives builds on TNB's foundation to create a frankly wonderful mod that I believe will greatly enhance how players make their living and move about the world.

Each of the 9 Hold Capitals now contains a Missives board offering quests for those in need of coin, supplies, or a good adventure. These quests range from incredibly simple to moderately difficult, with proportionate rewards.

The quests are localized to the hold in which the quest was received (save for Courier jobs intentionally designed to send the player to a different Hold), and each quest can be cancelled anytime -- both features sorely missing from TNB, and executed brilliantly in Missives.

I've also edited the mod so it doesn't use inappropriate NPC's from other mods, or send players to certain locations they cannot/should not access. (The mod's author, IronDusk33, made this process incredibly simple with his thoughtful mod design.) I've also adjusted the locations of several boards for compatibility with mods like ETaC and Dawn of Skyrim.

With 4.0's emphasis on Crafting and Player Housing, I've integrated Hearth Craft for a truly seamless "craft anywhere" experience. Players can now utilize the Builder's Workbench to craft a huge variety of furniture, decorations, and even entire Player Homes -- all placeable with Campfire's placement framework. You can craft this workbench anywhere with the player crafting ability, or craft it at a Forge.

HC's recipes all use pre-existing resources from Hearthfire and the rest of the mods in the lineup, so you now have even more reasons to collect that phat loot!

As I've mentioned in previous posts, Shrines are very important in 4.0. Religion players can worship at shrines to garner favor with the Divines/Daedric Princes, and Death is Highly Overrated turns each Shrine into a potential respawn point.

In keeping with these mechanics, and to give even more utility to Player Homes, I've integrated a custom version of Campfire Shrines so that Shrines are now purchasable and craftable.

Priests will often sell Shrines applicable to their deity, and you might find a shrine or two at your local pawn shop. I've spoken at length about some of these features in previous posts, so today I'd like to focus on an area I feel is particularly improved: Food.

The usefulness of Food is perhaps one of Skyrim's biggest shortcomings. I think Bethesda wanted food to be important -- there's a million food items and a cooking subsystem to boot -- but cooked recipes are barely more useful than simple ingredients, which are pretty useless themselves.

Requiem tries to address this by adding powerful buffs to certain foods, but since there are only a handful of recipes with these buffs, the problem persists. Most ingredients are useless, and only a few are worth grabbing.

I tried to address this problem myself with iNeed, which makes food an important part of staying alive, but even with that addition, Food as a system still lacks a certain panache. It's functional, but not fun.

This is where Hunterborn comes in. HB introduces many new cooking recipes alongside its new foods and animal parts, which I felt was a perfect opportunity to address the Food problem once and for all.

These recipes are fairly useless by default -- they are balanced for vanilla, after all -- but with the help of the mods I listed above, I've overhauled the food systems for the entire game.

Here's a quick list explaining how food will work in Ultimate Skyrim 4.0:

There is now a huge variety of recipes with useful character bonuses, all visible at a cookpot. Most of these recipes are geared towards stamina management, but many of them confer other bonuses as well.

These recipes utilize a wide range of ingredients, including animal meats, herbs, spices, and more. Put simply: if an item might be used for cooking IRL, you can probably use it in a recipe -- and that recipe will probably confer a useful bonus.

iNeed divides its foods into three satiation categories: Light, Medium, and Heavy. To encourage cooking, almost all cooked foods have at least Medium satiation, with many falling into the Heavy category as well. (Exceptions include small baked items like Tarts, etc.)

Most raw foods have Light or Medium satiation, but there are far more raw foods to consume. Can't forget about our lovely beast races, after all.

Here's a quick list explaining compatibility edits between various mod systems:

All SkyTEST creatures now operate using Hunterborn mechanics. You can find all of HB's proprietary items on SkyTEST creatures, including hunting tokens, meats, ingredients, and other animal parts. SkyTEST meats can also be frozen, just like HB/vanilla meats, and I've added many useful recipes for SkyTEST ingredients.

All Hunterborn recipes and foods have been fully integrated with other mods, including iNeed, Frostfall, Campfire, and more.

Inns will have much greater food variety, since these new foods have been properly distributed among appropriate Leveled Lists.

Many Hunterborn descriptions/effects/spells/etc. have been re-written to better fit Ultimate Skyrim's writing and copy philosophies. (No one will care about this as much as me, but I spent a lot of time on this, so I wanted to mention it. :D)

Many other small edits for compatibility, etc.

That about wraps it up for this week, I'd say! This task has been much easier thanks to the excellent (and recently updated) Requiem Survival Experience patch by UnmeiX, and I'm very excited for you guys to experience the new Hunterborn gameplay.\\

Some features worth looking forward to:

HB's primitive cooking ability has been expanded with recipes from all the other mods in US's lineup. Generally speaking: if a recipe calls for only one ingredient, you can cook it at any fire in the game. This is great for when your character is hungry, but you don't have a cooking pot on hand. (Cooking pots are still required for more complex recipes.)

Making a living as a hunter will be much more viable, thanks to increased values for many hunting spoils. These items are also affected by Hunterborn's progression system, so practicing your Hunting/trapping will yield even more valuable pelts and ingredients.

Many ingredient and food effects have been edited for increased usefulness and better balance for Requiem.

I'd like to leave you with my sincerest thanks for your steadfast support, and if any of you are interested, I've also attached a brief video I prepared for my grandfather's funeral. It was tremendous fun, and I can't wait to make the next one even better!

Now, onto the update!

My original goal for this week was to integrate Hunterborn, but HB's emphasis on craftables forced me to tackle a different project first: the Big Crafting Overhaul.

The BCO is one of 4.0's core mechanic changes, and addresses one of US's most significant problems: inconsistent crafting mechanics/rules.

As you all know, Ultimate Skyrim utilizes over 300 different mods. Many of these mods introduce their own craftables, which -- while awesome -- causes some pretty wild inconsistencies in crafting behavior. After all, every Mod Author has their own philosophy on how crafting should behave, and naturally their implementations do not always follow the same rules.

The goal of the BCO is to address these inconsistencies by unifying crafting mechanics and recipes, so that all craftables play by the same rules. This makes crafting much easier to understand and utilize, which in turn allows for some very fun emergent gameplay opportunities.

To implement these changes, we must tackle several different tasks.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The first task is clearly defining the purpose of each crafting station. In the current state of US, it's very unclear what each station is for. Some items are created at the Forge, others at the Tanning Rack, others at the Smelter, and the distinctions are often arbitrary and confusing.

With the BCO, each crafting station has a clearly defined role:

The "Create Item" Ability has been greatly expanded, allowing players to craft many items on the spot. This includes Hunterborn items, tents, backpacks/bandoliers, survival tools, crude weapons/armors, and pretty much anything that should be craftable anywhere. All you need are the materials and the right perks.

The Grindstone and Workbench function as they always have: tempering weapons and armor respectively.

The Tanning Rack and Smelter are both for breaking down equipment and creating raw materials required by crafting recipes. The only difference is that the Tanning Rack handles soft materials like Hide & Leather, while the Smelter handles metal materials like Iron, Steel, etc.

The Forge allows you to craft almost every recipe in the game, including recipes from the "Create Item" ability. The goal here is to prevent players from tediously hopping between crafting stations. Think of it as the final step in your crafting process, where you end up with your finished product.

After testing, I feel these changes greatly enhance the fun and accessibility of item crafting.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The second BCO task is making all craftable recipes visible to the player. Basically: if you can craft it, you can see it in your crafting menu -- whether or not you have the materials. (This excludes breakdown recipes, of course.)

As we've previously discussed, many modders avoid cluttering the crafting menu by hiding recipes unless the player has one or more required materials. This is quite considerate of them, but it can also prevent the player from seeing all the cool things they're able to craft.

Luckily, SkyUI eliminates this problem with its wonderful search and filter functions, which make it easy to sort even the largest crafting lists.

Now, players can easily search for cool things to create. If you want to make a Backpack, simply search "backpack" and you'll see everything you need to create it. If you need a warm cloak for the snow, search "cloak" to see all the different varieties of cloaks you can make (and their required materials).

If you have a penchant for Elven aesthetics, simply search "elven", or sort by the Elven material, and you'll have tons of options for filling out your cool Elven look.

Maybe you're a swordsman looking to branch out into other weapons? In that case, you could search for new weapons by name ("hammer", "maul", "glaive", etc.), or simply sort by the weapon class itself. Experiment with different playstyles and weapon types to find one that works for you!

If your character is an aspiring cook, pop by a cooking pot to see all the wonderful meals you can create! Maybe some delicious pies will entice you to build an oven or two, or maybe that beer-battered chicken will spur that brewery you've been considering.

These are only a few examples of course, but my hope is to encourage players to go on their own little adventures for crafting materials, or keep players on the lookout for certain items while accomplishing other tasks. I find this really connects players to the world around them, and further personalizes the player experience.

(If you're not a crafting character, remember that you can also commission most items from Skyrim's various smiths and craftsmen!)

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

That pretty much wraps up this week's update! I'll likely have more to say about the BCO and Hunterborn soon, along with some other surprises I'm saving for next week's update.

As always, I hope this post was to your liking, and thank you all for your continued support. The performance is comparable to NLVA's ENB, so if you can run that, you will be able to run this modified version of Snowfall.

I've added All Thieves Guild Jobs Concurrently, which will allow aspiring thieves to accept up to seven radiant jobs at once (one of each type). I believe this vastly improves the Thieves Guild experience, since you no longer have to return to Riften after each completed job -- a system clearly designed for fast travel users. It's also very fun to see where your jobs will take you, and plot your course accordingly!

To accommodate Snowfall's gorgeous new weathers, I've added the ENB Water Textures from Realistic Water Two. These textures greatly improve water fidelity at very little performance cost (though the mod is still optional, just in case).

I've added Real Roads for Skyrim, which adds some much-needed depth to Skyrim's flat road textures. This is another visual improvement with negligible performance impact, though it is also optional.

Adding mods is always awesome, but sometimes removing mods is even more important for a streamlined and performance-friendly experience. This week was especially "remove-heavy", so I wanted to lay out every mod that's been removed during 4.0's development so far:

- Climates of Tamriel (you've served us well)
- Death Alternative, and its addons
- Enhanced Lights and FX (farewell my old friend)
- Get Snowy (made redundant by Snowfall / Wet & Cold)
- Real Shelter
- RealVision ENB (superseded by Snowfall)
- Remove Big Blurry Snowflakes (redundant with new weathers)
- Spectacular Night Eye (redundant with Predator Vision, soon to be added)
- Vivid Landscapes ELFX Patch (no longer required without ELFX)

That wraps things up for this week! There's lots more to do, so I'll get back to it.

Thanks for all your support as always, and I'll see you next week!

BB

Very sorry my friends but I must push back today's stream. The stream will begin next Thursday, November 2nd @ 5:00 PM PST.

I'll make another post with the stream link earlier that day, so you can get your browser nice and warmed up. ;)

Now, onto the update!

This week's work has mostly centered on ENB's, weather mods, and lighting adjustments. I know last week's post announced Vivid Weathers as the new official weather mod/ENB for the installation, but after testing some new experimental features from NLVA and Snowfall ENB (and after a lot of tweaking and performance adjustments), it's looking more likely that one of those two mods will take VW's place.

In my opinion, Snowfall ENB is the obvious choice for its incredible performance, proprietary weathers, and plethora of ENB features (like auto-ambient lighting and delicious subsurface scattering/edge texturing for waters), but alongside ELFX, it currently makes dungeons and interiors far too dark. We're currently working on a fix for this issue, which shouldn't be too difficult after all the work we've already done tweaking and adjusting these mods.

Since I don't have any new mods to show off this week, I've attached some screenshots that should demonstrate some of the work we've been doing on visuals and lighting. (Images courtesy of Gatonegro and myself.)

Hope you guys enjoyed this update, and I'll see you again next week!

A happy Friday to you, my loves!

Everyone say hello to our newest contributors:

Rib Beelboosa

Arthur Kofman

Without further adieu, here's my progress on Ultimate Skyrim for the week!

Enemy AI is now vastly improved thanks to a slightly tweaked Combat Evolved. This makes combat much more engaging and strategic, while preserving Requiem's core combat mechanics and philosophy. (Good luck baiting power attacks now!)

Thanks to Spellsword, we've implemented an entirely new way to cast spells. You can now find or create powerful Spellweapons, which allow users to cast spells at half their usual Magicka cost (along with enchantment charges).

These spells bypass armor restrictions, and like ordinary spells, they scale with your skills and most perks. However, they do NOT benefit from cost reduction perks like ordinary spells, so Spellsword characters can never achieve the power or casting ability of pure mages. This allows for powerful hybrid builds and viable cross-classing!

Vivid Weathers and the Vivid Weathers ENB have officially replaced Climates of Tamriel and RealVision ENB. The new visuals are absolutely spectacular, and the new weather types will make you think twice before venturing out. The ENB is also built from scratch for Vivid Weathers, and performs wonderfully thanks to tweaks from our own /u/rodericktech.

I've added Underwater Treasure to encourage exploration of Skyrim's waterways and oceans. Treasure contents have been edited for balance, and to integrate US's other loot mods. The Ghost Sea contains some particularly nice treasures... if you can stand the cold!

We've re-implemented the unique cloaks from CCOR, patched for proper ownership by Novocaine. Removing item conditions allows players to see EVERYTHING they can craft, so they can seek out materials for exciting recipes. This system was inspired by Modded Minecraft, of which I am a huge fan!

Other small bugfixes and additions too small for the post, etc.

That's it for this week!
